The Danube has been reduced by 134 kilometers in length in the last two centuries, the cause is human activities, according to a study published Tuesday, according to DPA.

A study by an international team that analyzed sediment deposits in the river also showed that the Danube has become 40 percent narrower since the mid-19th century, Bavaria’s environment department said.

The investigation concluded that these changes were caused by interventions to straighten the river, as well as flood protection measures and the construction of dams.

After human interventions, the sediments could no longer flow through the Danube Delta to the Black Sea.

Instead, sediments formed on the banks of the river that constantly changed shape.

With a length of 2,850 kilometers, the Danube is the second largest river in Europe, after the Volga, in Russia.
