More than 100 million Americans will face extreme temperatures for this time of year and in contrast to the warm weather of the past few days. A completely atypical event for May snowed in Central Park in New York on Saturday, the US weather service reported, cited by CNN. The culprit is the polar vortex that will bring temperatures below 0 degrees Celsius in some northern and eastern states of the United States.
“Snow in Central Park! In May! The surface observation system recorded snow. The last time it snowed on this date in May was 1977,” a tweet from the NWS US meteorologists shows.
Temperatures were also at a record low on Saturday: 1 degree Celsius. During the night, it snowed in Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Maine. In Shaftsbury, Vermont, 22 inches of snow fell. In some northeastern states, the weather was felt more in early March than in mid-May.
