Democracy in the Balkans is in danger due to the influence of China and Russia, according to a Freedom House report, quoted by politico.eu.

The study included 29 countries from Central Europe and Central Asia. “There are fewer democracies in the area than at any other time in the last 25 years since we published the annual reports,” said Freedom House.

According to the non-governmental organization, Hungary is no longer a democracy and Poland is following in its footsteps, while the European Union has taken no action.

Hungary is listed as a country with a hybrid regime, due to the increased powers assumed by Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

In Poland, attacks by the ruling party against the judiciary are reported. United States President Donald Trump has not been involved in “defending democracy in the region,” the Freedom House report said.

Hungary’s Secretary of State for Communication and International Relations, Zoltan Kovacs, responded in a Twitter message accusing Freedom House of receiving financial support from George Soros and representing his interests. “Whoever does not conform to their liberal policies is denigrated,” wrote Kovacs.
