Police Commissioner Georgian Dragan, press statements from 20.30

Only 50 people over the age of 65 were fined by police for failing to comply with decisions made by authorities during the pandemic, Georgian Dragan, police commissioner of the Romanian Police General Inspectorate said on Friday night.

“Our mission is citizen safety, and preventing illegalities is the first option,” he said.

The press circulated the information that an elderly person living on welfare was fined by the police with several thousand lei.

In providing details, Commissioner Dragan said that “in Iasi, a person who was repeatedly identified in public space without a statement was fined and fined.”

He also drew attention to the fake news that has been circulating in recent days.

“There was also news about a person over the age of 65 who was fined for exceeding the legal travel time by 15 minutes. The news was bogus and first appeared on April 3,” Dragan said.

“We know that sanctions may seem high, but I want to clarify something. The objective of the police these days is not, as I said before, to sanction, but to be with the people, especially to limit the spread of the new Coronavirus,” he also stated.

For a clear picture, the Romanian police representative explained the sanctions applied in the last 24 hours.

“Of the total of almost 7000 penalties applied for noncompliance with the traffic restrictions provided by the military ordinances, only around 50 were applied to persons over 65 years of age,” added Georgian Dragan.
