Rick and Morty Anime Short Surprises with Dragon Ball, Akira Shout Outs

Adult Swim Con’s Toonami special stream debuted with a cool new anime short with Rick and Mortyand with that came some fun Dragon ball aNorth Dakota Akira screams to name a few. Titled “Rick and Morty vs. Genocider”, this new short was directed by tower of God Director Takashi Sano, produced by Sola Entertainment and animated on Telecom Animation Film. It was a much longer excursion than the Lone Wolf & Cub inspired work, Samurai and ShogunIt even featured some story beats that connected it directly to the main animated series saga. And tons of Easter eggs to go with it.

Much of the Easter eggs at the beginning belong to the main line Rick and Morty series (especially with Evil Morty’s return to the franchise), but anime ties begin to appear at the end of the short when Rick takes action against the Genocider. This begins with a funny shout to Dragon Ball while Rick gives himself a power boost and starts calling himself “Super Rick” as he flies.

When Rick brings the fight to Genocider, he activates a secret substance that has lodged in his teeth. This acts as a kind of super steroid that gives Rick a “Super Saiyan” as an aura when he starts flying and dodges multiple gravity shots that fired at him. Floating, he begins to dodge the explosions like Ultra Instinct Goku would and finally sends the explosions back to the Genocider’s ship.

This results in a massive bang that should seem familiar to Katsuhiro Otomo fans. Akira. The sprouting orbital explosion has a slightly different angle than the famous explosion that reaches a focal point in AkiraPost-apocalyptic history. This short not only brought lots of fun Easter eggs to Rick and Morty fans, but anime was also a great way to show love to anime fans.

The success of these two anime shorts has fans hoping for more someday, and perhaps the franchise will branch out with more anime experiments like this someday!
