The PGA Tour is getting close to having NBA star Steph Curry associated with a fall event that begins in 2021.
Plans have been in process for two years for Curry to host a tournament in Northern California, and the San Francisco Chronicle reported that a modified contract between the city of San Francisco and the tour would see Harding Park lose the 2026 Presidents Cup. to organize a long-term event.
The PGA Tour did not comment on the report, which said the contract would span at least five years and begin in September 2021, with the event likely to be the first on the 2021-22 calendar.
Curry, an avid golf player, saw a similar effort to have a tournament at Merced Country Club fail in 2019, though he prefers to see a tournament organized in a public place, to promote his “grow the game” initiatives.
Harding Park is the site of the PGA Championship, August 6-9. It has previously hosted two World Golf Championship events, as well as the 2009 Presidents Cup.
Workday, who stepped in at the last minute to sponsor last week’s tournament at the Muifield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, after the John Deere Classic was canceled for this year, would be the main sponsor of the Curry event.
