Report: Apple TV + breaks its audience records after the launch of ‘Greyhound’

Moving Tom Hanks’ Greyhound box office hit from box office to streaming sparked a stir, with Apple acquiring the movie for about $ 75 million. According to a Deadline report, it seems the investment was worth it.

While Apple does not officially report the audience numbers, Deadline sources say Greyhound’s opening weekend resulted in an audience “befitting a huge summer box office hit.” This resulted in Apple TV + seeing its biggest opening weekend.

Obviously, Apple’s viewing numbers should increase more and more for major new releases as more and more people sign up and the TV app becomes available on more and more platforms. However, the Greyhound’s release was further fueled by the stellar appeal of Tom Hanks, who also wrote the script for the film.

The report indicates that about 30% of Greyhound viewers were new subscribers to the Apple TV + service, which Apple hopes to retain regular users. When Apple TV + users go to Greyhound, Apple first shows a sizzle from its current list of content as a preview to help expose new audiences to what it has to offer.

However, it can be assumed that quite a few people will have subscribed to the free TV + trial to see Greyhound, and then canceled. Apple will have to present yet another box office hit to get those people back as paying users (since the free trial can only be used once).

Apple TV + currently features around 30 titles, as the company has focused on commissioning high-quality, high-budget originals rather than purchasing a later catalog. In terms of original movies, Apple has recently made some major commitments, including signing a $ 200 million Martin Scorsese project and a $ 120 million movie starring Will Smith as part of its in-house production unit at Apple Studios. These projects will begin filming next year.
