Relievers Brandon Workman, Heath Hembree, David Hale join Phillies in Atlanta

ATLANTA – Newcomers Brandon Workman, Heath Hembree and David Hale were active Saturday night in Philadelphia’s game against the Atlanta Braves.

The Phillies added the three right-handers, added in the trade on Friday, to their roster of 28 men as part of a flurry of moves.

The Phillies got Workman and Hembree and Boston Red Sox casho considerations in exchange for right-handers Nick Pivetta and Connor Seabold.

A source told Buster Olney of ESPN that the cash transactions that Boston sent were $ 815,000.

Hale was acquired by the New York Yankees in a deal for underage referee Addison Russ.

Workman, who had four saves in four chances with the Red Sox, said he was told of the trade during the third inning of the Boston game in Baltimore on Friday night.

“I was on my way to the bull,” Workman said Saturday. “The dugout called me out to tell me I was being traded.”

Workman said he had heard speculation about a possible trade. He said it was “kind of a surprise” to get the news during the game.

Lawyer Hector Neris has saved two in five chances for Philadelphia this season. The Phillies’ bullpen entered Friday night’s game with a 7.59 ERA, by far the worst in the major.

Workman said he has not been told by manager Joe Girardi if he will have the chance to save the ninth inning.

“Every time I get called up, I want the ball as good as I can throw, whatever inning or roll he wants it to feel,” Workman said. “I just want to perform as well as I can.”

The Phillies also put field player Adam Haseley back off the 10-day injured list. He has been out since August 12 with a left wrist sprain.

Outfielder Jay Bruce was placed on the 10-day IL, retroactive to Friday with a left quad-strain that limited his ability to run.

“We have to unpack it so he can be a complete player for us,” Girardi of Bruce said.

Right-hander Connor Brogdon and left-hander Cole Irvin were sent to the team’s alternative training site. Lawyer Deolis Guerra was appointed for commission.
