Red Sox flip flop on the governor’s first pitch before the opening game against the Orioles

Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker will launch the first pitch on the opening day of the Boston Red Sox. Wait, no, it isn’t. Actually, yes it is.

Hours before the first game at Fenway Park this season began on Friday night, there was confusion over whether the Republican governor would participate in the ceremonial first pitch.

Baker’s office sent an email early Friday saying it would.

But Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy denied it and told WEEI radio: “We hope he is there, but I can confirm that he is not pitching the pitch.”

A little later, a team spokesman said Kennedy spoke ill.

“The governor is, in fact, one of the participants in tonight’s first ceremonial launch,” Zineb Curran said in an email.
