Quarantine passengers from Canada, flights postponed to the south

TORONTO (AP) – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday announced tougher restrictions on travelers in response to newer, potentially more contagious strains of the novel coronavirus – including making hotel quarantine mandatory at their own expense when they arrive in Canada. And airline service to Mexico and all Caribbean destinations should be suspended until May 30-April.

Trudeau said that in addition to the pre-boarding tests already required in Canada, the government will introduce mandatory PCR testing at airports for those returning to Canada.

Passengers will then have to wait three days at a valid hotel for their test results, at their own expense, which is expected to exceed 2000 2,000, Trudeau said.

“Those with negative test results will then be able to quarantine at home under significant increased surveillance and enforcement.”

Strict costs for hotel stays include the cost of private PCR testing, safety, food, and the cost of measures taken to protect designated hotels and their workers.

The Prime Minister said those who test positive will be immediately quarantined at designated government facilities so that they do not take on special types of concerns. .

Trudeau also said the government and Canada’s major airlines have agreed to suspend service to solar destinations immediately. He said Air Canada, WestJet, Sunwing and Air Transit were canceling all Caribbean destinations and air service to Mexico starting Sunday, April 30.

Trudeau said he would make arrangements with his clients who are currently on tour to arrange their return flights to the regions.

He said starting next week, all international passenger flights must land at the following four airports: Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary and Montreal.

“Next week we will need to show a negative test to important passengers before entering the U.S. border, and we are working to meet the additional testing requirements for land travel,” Trudeau said.

Those already entering the country in Canada are required to self-isolate for 14 days and submit a negative COVID-19 test taken within three days before arrival.

The requirement to stay at the hotel on return will discourage the vacation as people do not want to quarantine at the hotel at their own expense on their return.

“It’s definitely a step in the right direction.”

More and more governments are thinking of ways to become more aggressive due to new types, delays in vaccinations, challenges of vaccinating the population, and stress on health care systems.

Trudeau also announced that parts of the next shipment of the Moderna vaccine, which arrives next week, will be delayed. He said Canada would receive 78% of the expected amount, translated into 180,000 doses.
