Getting your hands on the PS5 right now is still incredibly difficult. While buyers are still struggling to find a system in the wild, it looks like Sony is trying to get its reporters away from at least some of the recoiling ways.
In fact, if the new report is to be believed, there could be another upheaval in PS5 stock in the coming months.
The report alleges that Sony plans to build between 16.8 million and 18 million units in 2021, which will be possible following an increase in the supply flow of units. Digitimes claims that Sony shipped 3.4 million PlayStation 5 units early in the first month of its availability.
That number is growing significantly, thanks to the more plentiful availability of components needed to put the PS5 into production. That means PS5 restocks can be fully implemented, hopefully eliminating the need to buy systems from scalpers or stock stock alerts.
Digitimes says AMDA, which contributes a custom 7nm CPU to the PM5, gained additional capacity from semiconductor foundry TSMC to boost production. This should lead to a 40 to 50% increase in monthly service production, which translates to 1.4-1.5 million units in 2021. That’s one million units more than the 2020 build numbers, which will help reduce demand for the PS5 to a minimum. Bit.
The CPU is based on AMD’s Raizen Zen2 architecture, which has Radeon RDNA2 GPU. China’s Tongfu Microelectronics and Taiwan’s Silicon Precision Industries will split manufacturing duties at the rear end as a 70/30 split. Sony plans to make more PS5s for Asian regions after January 2021 thanks to these additional components, which will undoubtedly help frustrated buyers around the world to overcome the feeling of being unable to join the latest console generation.
Earlier reports indicated that Sony plans to ship 10 million PS5 units before March 2021, so the 3.4 million number may not come out. Previously, Sony had planned only 5 and 6 million units by March, but changed course with additional demand.
With additional components on the shelves and getting more PS5 units in the hands of customers, it looks like more users will eventually be able to experience the system for themselves. In our PS5 review, we honored it with PS3 4.5 stars, calling it the “future of console gaming.”
“If you manage to pick up the PS5 right now, know that it treats you like a true next-gen experience full of advanced hippies, beautiful graphics and almost zero friction between you and the games you want to play.”
If the source of the digitimes is right, feelings like “managing” to capture the PS5 may soon be a thing of the past.
