Young man from Coimbra died today after falling into a 20-meter well

The two young men “were childhood friends and were on top of the well when the lid, a concrete slab, broke and caused the well to fall into the well with a depth of about 20 meters,” the Lusa news agency said. Óbidos fire brigade commander Marco Martins, head of the team of divers that rescued the victims.

The accident occurred at 1:07 p.m., in the town of Protela, in the municipality of Bombarral, in the district of Leiria, with firefighters rescuing “a young woman of about 19 years of age who was on an intermediate slab of the well, in an area not submerged ”, explained the commander.

The young woman was transferred to the Hospital das Caldas da Rainha, with minor injuries.

The mortal victim, a 19-year-old young man, “was submerged about two meters deep and under the broken slab,” which, according to Marco Martins, forced a rescue operation that lasted until around 4:40 p.m. which involves two divers and the use of pumps to extract water.

There were 18 vehicles and 36 members of the Bombarral, Óbidos and Peniche corporations, the GNR and a team of psychologists from the National Institute of Medical Emergencies (INEM), who provided psychological support to the relatives.
