A 22-year-old Slovenian woman was convicted of fraud after the court found that she cut her hand to receive insurance compensation. Julija Adlesic had taken out five insurance policies in the year before the alleged accident that left her handless.

Julija claims that it was, in fact, an accident that occurred while cutting wood.

The court in Ljubljana (the capital of Slovenia) ruled that it was a scheme to illegally earn money through damages. The truth is that with the alleged accident he obtained a total of one million dollars (a little less than 850 thousand euros) in compensation paid by the different insurers.

Now Julija has been found guilty of fraud and sentenced to two years in jail. The boyfriend was also accused of participating in the scheme and was sentenced to three years in prison.

According to the BBC, which reports the story, the case dates back to 2019. Julija and several family members were detained after she entered the hospital with her hand severed above the wrist.

One of the events that led the court to convict them was that they intentionally left the severed hand behind, instead of taking it to the hospital, to have reconstruction surgery attempted. The court says that the intention of both was for the disability to be made permanent, so the compensation would be higher. However, the authorities recovered the hand in time to reattach it to the arm.

Another detail that ended up incriminating the couple was the use of the internet to carry out investigations on hand prostheses, the day before the alleged accident.

The young woman’s father-in-law was also convicted, but with a one-year suspended sentence. She was accused of having cut off her daughter-in-law’s hand, but she always denied it in court.

If they had succeeded in the plan, the couple would have received more than half a million euros at a time and Julija would continue to receive a monthly income for life.
