In the last week, Matosinhos was one of the municipalities with the highest number of covid-19 infections. Infections are increasing in the municipality, hospitalizations at the Pedro Hispano Hospital (HPH), which already occupies more than 60 beds, of the little more than a hundred that exist to respond to the pandemic.

At the beginning of this week, the Intensive Care services dedicated exclusively to patients infected by the new coronavirus, with a capacity for 21 patients, already exceeded half of the occupation capacity.

In May, the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) doubled its capacity when, in record time, 20 days, a new wing was built for patients in more serious condition, with 11 individual rooms with negative pressure.

Last Sunday, the president of the administration of the Local Health Unit of Matosinhos, António Taveira Gomes, He told the PUBLIC that there are conditions in the hospital to increase the capacity of the units dedicated to covid-19. But if at this point the space for potential expansion is not a problem, it is no longer the case of human resources, which, with the growing number of infected, may not be enough if it is necessary to expand. Patients continue to come to the intensive care of HPH and the work of the professionals of the unit is increasing, forcing them to carry out increasingly heavy and prolonged shifts.
