Civil Proteus warned today of the decrease in the minimum temperature between Thursday and Sunday throughout the continent, recommending “special attention” to children, the elderly, people with chronic diseases and the homeless.

“Special attention is needed to the most vulnerable population groups: children, the elderly and people with chronic diseases and the homeless population,” said the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) in a statement.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) forecasts wind and cold in the coming days, with the minimum temperature falling on Thursday across the continent between -1 and 10 degrees and a maximum temperature that ranges between 5 and 17 degrees.

On Friday, Christmas Day, a minimum temperature between -3 and 9 degrees and a maximum that varies between 4 and 18 degrees is expected, as well as the east quadrant wind, which blows with more intensity in the mountains at 80 km per hour, starting at dawn.

IPMA also anticipates the possibility of fog, ice and frost.

In a warning to the population, ANEPC says that the impact of these climatic conditions “can be minimized by adopting appropriate behaviors”, recommending that prolonged exposure to cold and sudden changes in temperature be avoided.

Proteo Civil advises the use of several layers of clothing, loose fitting and adapted to the ambient temperature, the ingestion of soups and hot drinks and the protective care on the part of workers who have been active outside, as well as defensive driving in places of Ice is likely to form on the road.

It also recommends “special attention” to braziers and fireplaces, which can cause poisoning due to accumulation of carbon monoxide and cause death, with adequate room ventilation.
