The melody continued when the two, after the triathlete’s death, traveled to Benavila, in the municipality of Avis, and kept their phones off for about 20 hours, “the time necessary to pack the body and transport it to Benavila and return to their respective homes, ”the document reads. The two exchanged messages regularly, but the conversations between June 22 and July 28 were deleted. Although deleted, said the Public Ministry, it was possible to recover one of them: “Don’t forget to delete the conversation.”
This is part of the story that the Public Ministry used to appeal the decision taken in March this year by the Loures Court, which acquitted António Joaquim of the crime of co-authorship of the homicide. This Tuesday, the Lisbon Court of Appeals sentenced António Joaquim to 25 years in preventive prison, 24 for qualified homicide and one year and 10 months for the crime of desecration of a corpse. In addition, he was suspended from the exercise of bailiff.
Almost six months after the decision of the Court of Loures, the Lisbon Court of Appeal considered it possible “to affirm with the necessary security that the accused was the accused António Joaquim”, since “the accused was the owner of the weapon and knew how to handle it. “. she skillfully, unlike Rosa Grilo, who is totally inexperienced in this matter (…) it makes no sense that she was the one who fired such a shot ». The Lisbon Court of Appeal did not accept the initial thesis that Rosa Grilo transported her husband’s body alone, having “had the help of another person to carry out this task, which, once again, could only have been the accused António Joaquim ».
However, António Joaquim was not taken to prison, as he can still appeal the decision. Regarding the conviction of Rosa Grilo, who is imprisoned in the Tires Prison and appealed the decision of the Loures Court, it remains. The Lisbon Court of Appeal found the interlocutory appeal to be “unfounded”.
After the death of Luís Grilo, the widow presented several versions of the events, which was enough to irritate the judge during the trial sessions. The computer engineer and triathlete disappeared after leaving home to train and was only found at the end of August, naked, with a bag over his head and with signs of having been shot. The body, which showed signs of decomposition, was discovered 140 kilometers from his home.
During the month in which the whereabouts of Luís Grilo were unknown, the woman gave interviews to various media, expressing the hope that the athlete would be found and always denying his involvement in the case. Meanwhile, she also participated in parties, took trips, went on vacations and music festivals, events mentioned by the collective of judges in March.
After the body was found, the investigation took a new turn. And Rosa Grilo too. The Judicial Police found a bullet in the couple’s bedroom, which raised suspicions that Rosa Grilo and António Joaquim killed the triathlete, especially for the life insurance claim of 500,000 euros that Luís Grilo had made and, according to the authorities , for sentimental reasons, since Rosa and António Joaquim maintained an increasingly close relationship. The two were arrested in September 2018, but António Joaquim was to be released from Tires prison in December 2019.
