The attempt to set in motion a fin whale that he threw this morning on a sandbar in the Ría de Aveiro, next to S. Jacinto, was suspended late in the afternoon, due to “lack of security conditions.”

In addition to the commotion caused by the high tide, the meteorological instability that is being felt this Monday did not allow the media to stay longer in the place.

According to information obtained from the Marine Animal Rehabilitation Center (CRAM) installed at ECOMARE in Gafanha da Nazaré, the cetacean, a male of almost 11 meters, was still alive at the time the rescue operation was interrupted.

The biology team, which had the support of the media activated by the Captaincy (Maritime Police and Firefighters), left the place at 6:45 p.m., at the ‘peak’ of high tide.

“The animal was already in the water, but we don’t know if it will shoot again or not. He is certainly in serious condition, he was ‘dry’ for a long time, we will check tomorrow. There were no conditions to continue on the site. The amplitude of the tide is very high, it is very complicated by the strong current ”, explained a CRAM source.

The whale, in its juvenile age, has a lower weight than usual, assuming that it could have been washed away by currents.

This is the first known case of release in the Ría de Aveiro. In 2014, an injured whale sailed through inland waters, and it was possible to guide it to the open sea through the harbor bar.
