The mandatory curfew starting at 1 pm is applied this weekend in 253 municipalities in mainland Portugal, representing 91% of the municipalities in this territory, ending most of the trade at the same time.

Regardless of the level of risk of transmission of covid-19, during this weekend the movement between municipalities of the entire Portuguese peninsula is prohibited, a measure that came into force from 11:00 p.m. on Friday and continues until 5:00 a.m. Monday, with a set of exceptions for authorized trips, for health reasons and going to work, for example.

As part of the extension of the state of emergency until January 15, the Government updated the list of municipalities at risk and decided to proceed with the “aggravation of measures” for this weekend, extending the mandatory curfews to Saturday and Sunday. in high-risk municipalities, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the next day, a measure that has been applied in territories with a very high and extreme risk of contagion by covid-19.

Of the 278 municipalities in the continental territory, 253 are at high, very high or extreme risk, all with more than 240 cases of covid-19 per 100,000 inhabitants, thus excluding only 25 municipalities from the 1:00 p.m. curfew hours this weekend. .

According to the Government decree that regulates the new state of emergency, the curfew provides for a set of authorized trips, which include the performance of professional duties, obtaining medical attention, going to establishments that sell food and hygiene products, assistance vulnerable people, exercise of freedom of the press and small tours on foot.

Regarding the operation of commerce in the municipalities subject to a curfew at 1:00 pm during this weekend, most commercial establishments can only operate between 8:00 am and 1:00 pm, with the exception of stores of equal size. or less than 200 square meters with door to the street, restaurants with home delivery or take-out, where pick-up is allowed until 10:30 p.m., and gas stations exclusively for vehicle refueling.

In addition to the mandatory curfew at 1:00 p.m. during this weekend, the 253 municipalities with the highest risk of contagion by covid-19 are subject to the general duty of home collection, which determines that, “on Saturdays and Sundays, in the period between 05:00 and 13:00, citizens must refrain from circulating in public spaces and roads, as well as in private spaces and roads similar to public roads, and stay at home, except for authorized trips ”.

According to the list of municipalities by risk level, which can be consulted at www.covid19estamoson.gov.pt, 56 municipalities are identified at extreme risk (more than 960 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), 132 at very high risk (among 480 and 960), 65 of high risk (between 240 and 480) and 25 of moderate risk (less than 240).

15 of the 18 district capitals on the continent are at very high risk of contagion, namely Beja, Braga, Bragança, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, Évora, Faro, Leiria, Lisbon, Oporto, Santarém, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo , Vila Real and Viseu.

Of the other three municipalities that are district capitals, Guarda has an extreme risk, while Aveiro and Portalegre have a high risk.

On Wednesday, the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, decreed the renewal of the state of emergency for another eight days, until January 15, to allow measures to contain the covid-19.

The head of state justified this renewal for only eight days, stating that “there is still little data that can be related to the period between December 23 and 27, that is, the period of relief of measures for Christmas, as well as the period next year, although the most recent figures are very worrying, demonstrating the urgency of emergency measures ”.

In the announcement of the measures for the new state of emergency, which took place this Thursday, Prime Minister António Costa said that, although the situation of the pandemic has not yet been fully clarified, the latest data indicates that “there is a worsening, “so it is likely that” more restrictive measures will be adopted as of next week, “admitting general confinement, similar to what happened in March, but” without affecting the normal functioning of the schools. “
