The Director General of Health said today that masks are a method that increases protection, but “they are not miraculous”, arguing that to reduce the spread of covid-19, it is necessary to reduce coexistence, because there is a pandemic.

Graça Freitas commented thus, in the ordinary conference of health authorities of the covid-19, the call of the mayor of Guimarães, Domingos Bragança, for the use of masks in the streets, in addition to closed spaces, after the number of infected people in the municipality “increased a lot.”

“There are a series of measures that take effect and masks help these measures, they are a barrier method that increases protection, they are not miraculous, because if they were miraculous it was the only measure we recommend,” he said.

Graça Freitas explained that it is not just a measure that will prevent the person from contracting or transmitting the virus. “Contagion is very easy and it is a set of measures that will reduce this contagion”, that is, “less contact between people, less fraternization.”

Guimarães wants to wear a mask on public roads

“We have to say clearly that, at this time, when we are going to see outbreaks” are mainly families, then social and work situations.

For this reason, he stressed, “families have to understand that they live in different houses, in different nuclei and in different bubbles when they get together, they are joining different worlds and one infected person is enough.”

In this sense, he warned, “coexistence must also be reduced, we are in a pandemic.”

Present at the conference, the Minister of Health, Marta Temido, added that “the necessary measures were taken at the right time, which is the moment of the test (test), the moment of consolidation that is the moment to ponder.”

“We want to be precocious, but we do not want to take measures that are disproportionate and affect equally relevant values and the weighting of the values in presence is one of the most important aspects at a political and technical level and to whom it is held responsible,” said Marta Temido.

Graça Freitas said that it is not the custom of the authorities “to take measures that are not as effective”, as they would like, it is mandatory, however, they are always open “to the best scientific evidence.”

“I assume my enormous responsibility, but this is a health crisis”

“It does not mean that in specific situations where a greater number of people is expected for any reason, it cannot be recommended,” a different situation “is to recommend universal use,” he stressed.

Questioned at the conference on the protection of paternity in the monitoring of minor children who need to be in prophylactic isolation or in a situation of illness, the Minister of Health said that it derives from the law and has already been approved.

“It is important to know that parents have the right to accompany their minor children and, although we do everything possible to avoid the closure of schools and the interruption of school activities, if the question is to protect the parents of these children, it is provided by law, ”he said.

The covid-19 pandemic has caused more than 910,000 deaths worldwide since December last year, including 1,855 in Portugal.
