The pulmonologist António Diniz, for his part, asks the Portuguese to comply with the current measures, warning that the situation cannot be resolved or controlled “upstream”, that is, in hospitals. However, it considers that the measures applied by the Government are not sufficient and arrived too late.
Both doctors criticized the lack of clarity in communication and speech by the government and warned that the scarcity of resources in the NHS applies not only in the fight against Covid-19, but also in the response to all other pathologies .
This weekend, several hospitals in the North exhausted the capacity to respond to patients who need ECMO, an essential extracorporeal circulation device for the treatment of critically ill patients, and began transferring patients to hospitals in the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo region. .
But the pressure on hospitals could mount further in the coming week. The Portuguese Association of Hospital Administrators estimates that in five days the total number of hospitalizations can reach 4,500 patients, in the worst scenario of an increase in covid-19 cases, and 605 intensive care beds occupied by this pathology.
This Sunday, the epidemiological bulletin revealed that 415 people with covid-19 were hospitalized in intensive care, and a total of 2929 hospitalizations.
