The Apostolic Nuncio in Portugal, D. Ivo Scapolo, was received today by the Executive in the Chamber of Viana do Castelo. The Italian archbishop, ambassador of the Holy See in Portugal since August 2019, came to preside over the priestly ordination of the Viennese priest João Basto and took the opportunity to learn about the reality of the municipality.

During the reception, the Mayor, José Maria Costa (PS), offered the Apostolic Nuncio the facsimile of the 1st edition of the work “VIDA DE DOM FREI BERTOLAMEV DOS MARTYRES”, from 1619, which corresponded to the first book published in Viana do Castelo , prepared by the municipality.

The Viennese mayor took the opportunity, in the presence of the Apostolic Nuncio, to deliver to the Diocesan Administrator, Monsignor Sebastião Pires Ferreira, the medals of honor attributed by the City Council to the bishops D. Anacleto Oliveira and D. José Pedreira, who died in 2020.

The mayor, in his speech, thanked the ambassador of the Holy See for the visit to the municipality, also expressing “the gratitude and recognition of Viana do Castelo for the pastoral work carried out by the Viennese bishops who died last year.”

José Maria Costa highlighted the work carried out by D. Anacleto Oliveira in the cause of the beatification of São Bartolomeu dos Mártires, both with the Episcopal Conference and with the Holy See, in promoting the cause of beatification.

It should be noted that the Italian Archbishop D. Ivo Scapolo has been the Apostolic Nuncio (ambassador of the Holy See) in Portugal since August 2019. The official, who since 2011 was the Pope’s diplomatic representative in Chile, succeeds D. Rino Passigato. , who submitted his resignation after exceeding the age limit established in Canon Law.

D. Ivo Scapolo was born in Terrassa (Padua, Italy) on July 24, 1953, having been ordained a priest on June 4, 1978.

Doctor in Canon Law, he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See on May 1, 1984 and served in the Pontifical Representations in Angola, Portugal, the United States of America and in the Section for Relations with States of the Secretariat of State from the Vatican.

He was appointed Apostolic Nuncio in Bolivia on March 26, 2002, in Rwanda on January 17, 2008, and in Chile on July 15, 2011.
