Chega’s dinners have been controversial. Some of the photos and videos of the event shared on social media show that the party is not following the rules of social distancing. DGS guarantees that recommendations have been made, but does not disclose them. Police only act if there are complaints
According to Expresso, at Chega’s dinners it seems easy to forget that the country is going through a pandemic: tables without distancing, people very close, kisses and hugs and no mask.
This is the the scene of Chega’s dinner-rallies, that have been carried out in various parts of the country. Even so, André Ventura guarantees that the rules of social distance are observed because he requires periodic disinfection of the hands and the measurement of the temperature at the entrance.
At the controversial dinner held in Leiria, on August 8, more than 400 people who sat at 14 tables of 30 seats each. In the photographs and videos of the event you can see that there was no social distance, says the express newspaper.

15 days ago, at the rentrée of the party, in Loulé, the picture was the same. Although the tables are for smaller groups, Ventura did not respect the rules distance. The party leader addressed all the women present to offer a flower without a mask, while the participants circulated without the care recommended by the DGS.
At the last event of the party, last Saturday, 450 people were present. The party leader took the stage to speak, hugging the district leaders and greeting other supporters, also without a mask.
HE Expresso confronted the leader Chega with the absence of care, but André Ventura guarantees that all the distance rules have been met. However, he recognizes that it is difficult to meet all the standards when surrounded by followers.
“We even had to cut the capacity in half, all the standards required by the DGS have been met. But as it is sometimes difficult to do everything to the letter at this time, when there are many people involved, in the campaign on the street I know it will be even more difficult ”, says the leader of Chega ao Expresso.
In this context, the Expresso newspaper contacted the Directorate General of Health, which explains that an opinion was issued on the facts in question and that communication with Chega was made through emails or letters. However, he refused to reveal the list of recommendations, claiming that the case of the PCP (who held the Avante party last weekend) was an exception.
DGS also said that it cannot guarantee compliance with all the rules. health at André Ventura events, since it is the “security forces and services that monitor compliance with current legislation and regulations.”
PSP’s public relations office, questioned by Expresso, guarantees that trips will only be made to the place where these political events take place “after complaints” or an “inspection that was already planned” on that private property. For this reason, no police authority was present at the Chega events to ensure compliance with the recommendations.
