Vasiliy Kulkov, a former footballer who played for Benfica and FC Porto, died in the 1990s. The Russian, who died at 54, had been battling esophageal cancer for over a year.
Kulkov came to Portuguese football – Benfica – in 1991, with Yuran, another Russian. He also shared the field with Russian Aleksandr Mostovoi.

In 1994, however, he moved to FC Porto where he only ended up playing one season before returning to Russia and Spartak Moscow.

In 1999 he would still return to Portugal, to play for Alverca.
