The Portuguese Society for Health Management warned today that, although the vaccination campaign against covid-19 begins this month, the effects will not be felt until autumn, “in the best of cases.”
The organization, whose objectives are, among others, the promotion of the management of health organizations and the dissemination of research in health management, launched the alert today in a statement, with the management admitting to be concerned about some reactions negative population, namely when a date is indicated for their vaccination based on the SNS / DGS simulator.
“Although vaccination begins in concrete during this month, the beneficial effects of it certainly will not be felt in the community before fall in the best of cases,” warns the society, advancing examples of vaccine programming.
“An 85-year-old person who does not appear to have any serious illness should only get vaccinated in April or May of this year if current rules are maintained. If the person is 55, they don’t even have a probable date, and their vaccination could occur by simple calculation there for June / July or even later, ”he says.
Noting that the arrival in Portugal of the first batch of vaccines before the end of 2020 “was only a symbolic act that aimed to show a light of hope to Europeans and the world”, the Health Management Society guarantees that the idea that the The end of the pandemic is “just around the corner”, it is not true.
“The preferred choice of health professionals from only a few central hospitals for the first vaccinations will have been a strategy of the Ministry of Health to create a reasonable dose of confidence in vaccination in the community and never an award for the work of the professionals of the National Health Service (SNS) in the fight against covid-19 ”, he says.
Even so, the entity admits that this decision “may give the opportunity for all SNS health units to be 100% operational by the end of this month.”
With this, it is possible that “he will recover partially, but quickly, what was lost in 2020 of thousands of consultations, exams and surgeries that should have been performed.”
However, although it is possible to “see a light at the end of the tunnel”, the road ahead is still long and “one must be on guard”, he warns.
“The quantity of vaccines that arrive in Portugal has several imponderables and nobody will be able to guarantee the number and the exact moment of their arrival”, says the direction of the Health Management Society, reiterating that nothing has changed in the control of the pandemic and recommending for continue “their effort to contain and care according to the rules already known.”

The state of emergency decreed on November 9 to combat the pandemic was renewed until January 7, with mandatory curfews in the counties with the highest risk of contagion.
The Government decided to maintain the measures envisaged for Christmas, but aggravated those of the New Year period, with a curfew starting at 11 p.m. on December 31 and at 1 p.m. on December 1, 2 and 3 January. .
It is also prohibited to move between municipalities between 00:00 on December 31 and 05:00 on January 4.
The operation of restaurants throughout the continental territory is allowed until 10:30 p.m. on the last day of the year, and until 1:00 p.m. on January 01, 02 and 03.
