Vaccine: DGS wants older people to stay at the bottom of their priorities

The first plan of the General Directorate of Health (DGS) to vaccinate the Portuguese against the new coronavirus places the population most vulnerable to contagion at the end of the priority list. People over 65 should be protected after four groups in the front row, including healthy people and those who are younger, between 60 and 64 years old.

The proposal was presented by the general director of Health, Graça Freitas, at the meeting of the National Public Health Council last week and sparked outrage. Some of the 22 experts asked until the preliminary plan was immediately ignored. “It should never have been featured, not there or anywhere. It is shocking that the most mentioned risk group appears in the last place ”, said one of those present, who requested anonymity given the implicit duty of secrecy.

“The vaccine aims to immediately prevent severe forms and mortality from covid and it is the elderly who are most at risk, so they should be among the first to vaccinate,” defends one of the experts. However, this is not what is envisaged in the DGS draft, which made some experts present at the meeting make it clear that they will give their dose to the elderly, in case the proposal goes ahead.
