“We want to alert the public that we have identified two foreign actors, Iran and Russia, who have taken specific actions to influence public opinion regarding our elections,” John Ratcliffe said during a press conference.
According to the official, both Russia and Iran accessed data from American voters, information that Tehran would have already used to harm President Donald Trump.
“We have already seen Iran sending fake emails with the aim of intimidating voters, inciting social tensions and damaging the president,” he said.
Regarding Russia, the national director of intelligence services said that so far there is no evidence that he has used the information he obtained.
“These data can be used … to try to give registered voters false information, in the hope of causing confusion and chaos, and undermining confidence in American democracy,” he explained.
Ratcliffe’s remarks come after Democratic voters in states like Florida or Alaska have received intimidating ’emails’ in recent days, allegedly from the far-right group Proud Boys.
The emails, which the United States said were sent by Iran, ordering Democrats to vote for Trump.
At the same press conference, the director of the FBI, the agency in charge of guaranteeing electoral security, said that “there is no tolerance for foreign interference” in the US elections.
“We have worked for years to build resilience in our electoral infrastructure and today that infrastructure remains strong. (…) You can be sure that your vote counts, ”said Christopher Wray.
