A “new variant” of SARS-CoV-2, the rapidly spreading coronavirus 19, has been identified in the UK, British Health Minister Matt Hancock said on Monday.

“We have identified a new variant of the coronavirus, which may be associated with a more rapid spread in south-east England. Initial analysis suggests that this variant is spreading faster than existing variants.”he told deputies, in a statement in the House of Commons.

Hancock said more than 1,000 cases with this variant have been found, predominantly in southern England, where infections have accelerated in recent weeks.

The official also said that similar variants have been found in other countries in recent months and that British health authorities have notified the World Health Organization (WHO). “At this point, there is nothing to suggest that this variant may cause more serious complications of the disease and it is highly unlikely that this mutation will not respond to the vaccine.”he said.

In addition to London, parts of Essex and South Hertfordshire counties will move to the highest tier on the three-tier scale of restrictions, meaning that people from different households can only meet in open public spaces and bars and restaurants must close , unless they are sold out.

Some London municipalities have chosen to end schools by the end of this Tuesday.
