Elements of the Maritime Police, the Institute for Aid to Castaways and GNR, try to locate the missing young people, at the end of this afternoon, in the sea of Praia da Barra, in Ílhavo. The accident occurred at around 6.15pm, after three young men decided to go bathing, being finally surprised by a drinking fountain. Two of them were immediately rescued by surfers, but the third would disappear.

Since the bathing season only begins in this part of the country on June 15, the beach is not under surveillance. “The Maritime Authority has done everything possible to advise people not to go into the water, since there is no surveillance and rescue device,” emphasizes Humberto da Silva Rocha, commander of the Captaincy of the Port of Aveiro.

The young people in question are “about 20 years old” and “are from the Aveiro region,” according to the commander. At the moment, searches are mobilizing three ships (one from the Maritime Police, another from the GNR Coastal Control Unit and a third from the Life-Saving Station). “They will be reinforced with a helicopter and a Portuguese Navy ship,” added the official.

This Tuesday the municipal festival of Aveiro was celebrated, which celebrates the day of the patron saint Santa Joana, and the sun offered to Aveirenses.
