The workers of the Misericórdia de Guimarães are on strike this Thursday, ensuring only minimal services, to force their salary parity to colleagues from other private institutions of social solidarity (IPSS), a union source told Lusa.

The strike was called by the Portuguese Trade, Office and Service Workers’ Union (CESP) because, according to its director Ana Rodrigues, “the wage differences for grants compared to other IPSS are significant and in Misericórdia de Guimarães the situation is particularly serious ”.

According to the trade unionist, a home helper earns the minimum wage [635 euros], without any additional. In other IPSS the base salary is 646, plus 102 euros of seniority plus payment for night work.

“Now, if we already think that these IPSS pay little and we are demanding increases of 35 euros, much more will have to complain about mercy and particularly that of Guimarães,” added the union member.

Ana Rodrigues said that the Misericórdia de Guimarães employs 200 home helpers, 60 of whom gathered this morning in protest in front of the institution’s facilities.

Regarding the adherence to the strike, the leader assured that “it was total, since there were only those who complied with the minimum services, which in this case are significant.”

In a statement issued in the meantime, CESP affirms that it cannot accept that the salary of home helpers, with five, 10, 15, 20, 25 and more years of service in institutions, is the National Minimum Wage. We do not accept that they do not pay seniority, or value our specialization ”.

Noting that “for at least four years, the salaries of the majority of workers have not been increased”, CESP asks that “there must be courage to value the professional careers of those who, in a particularly difficult moment, do not abandon the users, work to the limit of their strengths and capacities, doing everything possible to serve those who need it most ”.

The Lusa agency requested a comment from the Misericórdia Administrative Board, which was not delivered on time, until around 12:30.
