Twenty-one students from the Lixa schools in Felgueiras and two adults were placed in isolation after having been in contact with a person who tested positive for COVID-19, a municipal source said on Friday.

According to Rosa Pinto, councilor of the Chamber of Felgueiras, Porto district, all students undergo tests this Friday and are asymptomatic.

The mayor explained that the case was triggered by an employee of a study center who, however, tested positive for the disease.

The employee had participated in the logistics of transporting the students on Monday and Tuesday.

The councilor pointed out that, in addition to the students, the technical director of the study center and a fellow are also testing themselves.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed at least 946,727 deaths and more than 30.2 million cases of infection in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

In Portugal, 1,894 people died from 67,176 confirmed cases of infection, according to the most recent bulletin from the Directorate General of Health.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December in Wuhan, a city in central China.

After Europe succeeded China as the center of the pandemic in February, the Americas are now the one with the most confirmed cases and the most deaths.
