The United States government previously purchased 200 million doses of Moderna’s vaccine

The outgoing president of the United States, Donald Trump, assured, this Friday, on the social network Twitter that Moderna’s covid-19 vaccine was “overwhelmingly approved”, without the regulator making a formal announcement of a decision.

“Moderna’s vaccine has been overwhelmingly approved. Distribution will begin immediately,” Trump wrote, at a time when the US Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet given a “green light” for commercialization.

The FDA’s decision is expected later today, following the recommendation on Thursday from an expert committee to authorize the vaccine for marketing.

US Vice President Mike Pence, who was being vaccinated with the Pfizer drug just minutes after Trump’s announcement, assumed that the pending formal approval of Moderna’s vaccine is still pending.

“We have one, and perhaps in a few hours, two safe and effective vaccines against the coronavirus. When it is approved, which we expect today, we will be in a position to send vaccines throughout the country next week,” he added.

Moderna’s vaccine was deemed safe and effective by the FDA, in a summary of data released earlier this week, leaving little doubt about its future authorization.

The published analysis confirmed an average effectiveness of 94.1%.
