Traffic on the Second Circular, towards Benfica – Aeroporto, in Lisbon, will be cut off in the next two weekends, between 6:00 am on Saturday and 6:00 am on Monday, for requalification works, the municipality announced this Friday.

The Lisbon City Council reported that the work includes the repair of expansion joints in the viaduct over the Radial de Benfica, in the direction of Benfica-Aeroporto, and involve the “Total circulation cut in the Second Circular”.

Planned in phase 2 of the requalification of the Second Circular, the works begin in Radial de Benfica and end in Estrada do Calhariz de Benfica, during the next two weekends, starting from 1From November 4 to 16 and from November 21 to 23, between 6:00 a.m. on Saturday and 6:00 a.m. on Monday.

On April 9 of this year, the Lisbon City Council approved the award of the resurfacing of the Second Circular for approximately 4.5 million euros, announcing the sending of the contract to the Court of Accounts to receive the prior visa necessary for the start of the works. .

In a statement, the capital’s executive said that the proposal for the award of the work, which has an expected term of ten months, was approved only with abstention, by the councilor elected by PSD Teresa Leal Coelho.

The Lisbon City Council also reiterated that, as previously announced, the works will be carried out between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., except on weekends and during the month of August, periods in which the works will be carried out. will perform during the 24 hours.

According to the specifications, the contract consists of “renovating the existing bituminous layer of the existing pavement, avoiding more intrusive and expensive operations, which the future projects of the Second Circular advise against”.

The specification also establishes that a total cut off to road traffic is not allowed and that, at the end of each working day (at 06:00 hours), traffic in both directions is reestablished, “without obstacles”.

In December, the mayor of Lisbon, Fernando Medina (PS), justified the commitment to “the state of the road”, considering that “it was not possible to wait any longer”.

According to the mayor, the contract will not imply a change with respect to the current one, consisting of maintenance work on pavements, paintings and public lighting.
