In three different categories, three national destinations were considered the best in the world by the World Travel Awards, considered the Oscars of tourism.

2020 is not guaranteed to be another record year for domestic tourism. The pandemic plunged the sector into a crisis due to the lack of demand motivated precisely by the virus. Even so, national destinations are still considered one of the best in the world.

The Word Travel Awards, considered the Oscars of Tourism, once again considered Madeira the best island destination in the world. The city of Lisbon is the best City Break destination in the world and the Algarve the best beach destination in the world, according to information published this Friday, November 27.

Rita Marques, Secretary of State for Tourism, in a statement, highlights that “by overcoming all limitations, we preserve the reputation and notoriety of our destinations.” “We show the world that we are a safe country, ready for everyone to receive it, whenever possible. Many thanks to all the Portuguese, who have contributed so that Portugal continues to be among the best,” he added.

The figures known so far in terms of tourism have no comparison with those of recent years. To give you an idea, in the first nine months of this year, the tourist accommodation units in Portugal received 8.6 million tourists, of which 5.2 million lived in Portugal. Compared to the same period last year, the difference is significant: 21.3 million guests, of which only 8.3 million were residents of the country, according to the INE.

Looking at these three regions that were awarded, the numbers are equally different. Until September, accommodation units for travelers in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area received just over two million guests, well below the 6.2 million in the first nine months of 2019.

Paula Oliveira, executive director of Associação Turismo de Lisboa, in a statement sent to the newsrooms, points out that the fact that the capital has been recognized as the best destination for City-Break “is excellent news in such a catastrophic year. a global recognition and continuity of the quality and diversity of Lisbon’s tourist offer and will undoubtedly be a reference for foreign tourists as soon as they start planning their trips ”.

The official also says that the fact that the Lisbon region combines nature, beaches, a natural surf reserve, UNESCO world heritage, gastronomy, two estuaries or even the ocean are factors that, “associated with the desire to travel that people maintain, they are highly positive when the pandemic is over. But until that day comes, it is essential to preserve the economic fabric of tourism so that the sector can ensure, with the highest quality, its crucial role in a desired recovery. soon as possible. “.

The Algarve had 1.7 million guests until September of this year. From January to September 2019, it was 4.2 million. And Madeira registered just over 404,000 guests until September, when in the same period last year it exceeded 1.1 million people, according to the INE.

The crisis that tourism is going through is not only felt on a national scale. All destinations are going through serious difficulties due to the pandemic that led governments to implement serious limitations on the movements of their citizens. International estimates suggest that next year, even due to expectations about a vaccine, the sector may start to recover a bit, although recovery and recovery to 2019 levels should only occur from 2022.
