The Prime Minister announced this Monday, on the last day of the Tourism Summit, that restaurant and tourism customers will be able to recover part of the VAT paid on purchases in these sectors in new purchases. The measure, said António Costa, is part of a demand support program that the Government will include in the State Budget proposal for 2021, which will be delivered in mid-October.

“We are working to include in the State Budgets for next year a demand support program that allows customers to recover part of the VAT paid for tourist and restaurant services on new purchases in the tourism and restaurant sector,” he said. The Observer contacted the Ministries of Finance (since the measure refers to taxes, as is the case with VAT, and the State Budget) and the Economy (which supervises Tourism), but none of them were available. to provide additional clarifications, specifically on how to recover the VAT already paid.

The Prime Minister also recalled that the Government is preparing “the relaxation of the legal framework of the measure to support the recovery of the economy” -in practice the substitute for simplified dismissal- to adjust it to the new reality of the evolution of the economy . economy. “In particular, the evolution of the economy in sectors such as tourism, which clearly did not have the evolution that was expected to have at the time the measures of the Economic and Social Stabilization Program (PEES) were designed,” said António Costa .

Still on Monday afternoon, the Minister of Economy, Pedro Siza Vieira, will give more details on how this measure will be made more flexible. The simplified dismissal was replaced in August by the measure to support gradual recovery and by the extraordinary economic incentive to normalize business activity (which includes support equivalent to two minimum wages per worker paid in six months or a minimum wage paid of one time).

António Costa also assured that the Government will continue working “so that nothing justifies the delay of the new Lisbon airport with the capacity to respond to what will be the post-covid demand.”

During the inaugural session of the summit, the president of the Portuguese Tourism Confederation (CTP), Francisco Calheiros, asked precisely that the simplified dismissal be replaced “as soon as possible”, ensuring that if the measures are not agile, a increase in unemployment.

Regarding the Lisbon airport, Francisco Calheiros indicated that it is necessary to “work immediately” on the project.
