The President of the Republic is going to send the Government today the decree to renew the state of emergency. The executive will then rule on the matter so that Parliament can decide on the renewal on Friday and the government announce the measures on Saturday.

“Then, this afternoon, the President of the Republic will present the draft Decree to the Government for opinion. Tomorrow the Assembly of the Republic will meet to speak. And only on Saturday will the government announce the measures it will adopt in compliance with the Presidential Decree, ”according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s office.

The measures to be adopted by the Government “have to respect the limits imposed by the Decree of the President of the Republic and this depends on the authorization of the Assembly of the Republic and is governed by the Law of the State of Emergency”, explains an official source from the São Bento Palace.

Given the current situation in which the pandemic has evolved and with a view to renewing the state of emergency, “the Government understood that the President of the Republic should be given the opportunity to hold a new meeting with experts, involving all social actors and politicians, before making new decisions, to take stock of the measures already taken and their impact and in order to promote better information to all stakeholders ”.

António Costa’s office says that “contrary to what was reported, no decisions have yet been made, which would not make sense before the ongoing hearings. Obviously, there are several scenarios that are discussed with the experts but no decisions have been made, so any announcement now is pure speculation.
