The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, today swore in the new Secretary of State for Planning, Ricardo Pinheiro, who replaces José Mendes in office, in a restricted ceremony at the Belém Palace, in Lisbon.

The ceremony, which began at the scheduled time, at 8:30 p.m., was held in the Ambassadors Room of the Belém Palace and was attended by, among others, the Minister of Planning, Nélson de Sousa.

In a note posted on the website of the Presidency of the Republic, the change was announced today following a proposal from the Prime Minister, António Costa, accepted by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

“The President of the Republic accepted the Prime Minister’s proposal to resign, at his request, José Fernandes Gomes Mendes, as Secretary of State for Planning, and the appointment, in the same position, of Ricardo Miguel Furtado Pinheiro”, you can read above

Ricardo Pinheiro, 40, an electronic engineer by profession, was mayor of Campo Maior, district of Portalegre, a circle for which he was elected deputy in the last legislative elections.

In parliament, Ricardo Pinheiro has been the coordinator of the PS Parliamentary Group in the Committee on the Environment, Energy and Spatial Planning.

The last change of government occurred on September 16, when the prime minister replaced five secretaries of state, a reshuffle that later included the ministries of Education, Health, Infrastructure and Housing, and the Sea.

This recomposition of the Government, like the current one, with the change of a single Secretary of State, did not change the dimension of the executive.

In addition, the same happened with the first remodeling of the current legislature, which occurred five months ago, with the replacement of Mário Centeno by João Leão as Minister of State and Finance and the consequent change of three Secretaries of State, who took office in the June, 15.

At that time, due to the covid-19 pandemic, the head of state, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, took over the new Finance team in a restricted ceremony at the Belém Palace, without other guests.

The XXII Constitutional Government, the second minority executive headed by António Costa, took office on October 26, 2019 at the Palácio da Ajuda, in Lisbon, after the victory of the PS in the legislative elections on October 6, without an absolute majority, composed of by 19 ministers and 50 secretaries of state.
