Three French policemen were shot and killed on Wednesday after responding to domestic violence in a remote village in the center of the country.

According to Reuters, there is also a fourth police officer who was seriously injured in the shooting started by a gunman.

The mayor of the city of Saint-Just, near the scene of the incident, says that a rapid reaction team is already in place and that dead policemen have been called in to report domestic violence in a town 180 kilometers from the city of Lyon.

When the police arrived at the scene of the complaint, a man began shooting at the officers, setting fire to the house where he lived with the woman.

The woman, allegedly a victim of domestic violence, sought refuge on the roof of the house and has already been rescued by the authorities. According to the BFMTV channel, the house was completely consumed by flames.

The French interior minister said the suspect was found dead by more than 300 police officers assigned to locate and arrest him.

On Twitter, Gérald Darmanin says he’s heading to the crime scene.
