The Deucalion Supercomputer should be installed in the Scientific and Technological Park in Barco, Guimarães, in a building that was occupied by the Farfetch offices. The memorandum of understanding between the Chamber of Guimarães, the Foundation for Science and Technology and the University of Minho, for the installation, in Guimarães, of an advanced computing center – Minho Advanced Computing Center (MACC) – will be discussed at the next executive meeting of the Guimarães city council, on Monday 21.
The Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education integrated the National Network for Advanced Computing (RICA) in the National Roadmap for Research Infrastructures of Strategic Interest, in the terms of the memorandum of understanding signed between the Government of the Kingdom of Spain and the Government of the Republic. Portuguese, on December 21, 2018, based on the creation of the MACC, which must be closely coordinated with the FCT.
The University of Minho is another component of this infrastructure integrated into the Roadmap.
Within the MACC framework, a supercomputer called Deucalion will be installed in Guimarães, capable of performing 10 billion operations per second. “The installation of this supercomputer will contribute decisively to Portugal’s participation in excellent science and innovation activities, which involve very demanding calculation and data processing processes,” reads the tripartite note that will go to the Chamber meeting. .
Deucalion has a mass of approximately 26 tons and a dissipation of 1.7 megawatts of electrical energy. In other words, you will need specially adapted conditions for your installation and operation.
The Avepark science and technology park, located in the Barco parish in Guimarães, is mentioned in the document “as the most suitable location”.
With the memorandum that will now be submitted to the council for consideration, the Guimarães City Council commits to acquire Avepark lot 15, including the property that exists there. This building housed the Farfetch offices, which consisted of two floors with 1,344 square meters each. The property also has an underground plant initially designed to serve as data center and it may be this particularity that makes it attractive for the Deucalion installation.
Despite the fact that the memorandum between CMG, FCT and UMinho does not mention values, the property is advertised in properties for values between 1 million and 800 thousand euros and 1 million and 950 thousand euros.
In addition to this building, the Câmara de Guimarães must also assign lot 18, which it owns, “under the terms and price to be agreed between the parties.”
The University of Minho is in charge of preparing and submitting the request for the financing tender for the Support System for Scientific and Technological Research (SAICT) of the Regional Operational Program for the North 2020.
The deadline for submitting applications to SAICT ended on October 30 and, according to the Notice of Submission of Applications to SAICT / 2020, the North 2020 Managing Authority makes the reasoned decision on applications within 60 working days . , which points to the last days of January 2021.
