Portugal added 1,278 cases of covid-19 in the last 24 hours, exceeding the threshold of 1,000 infections for the third time, on a day in which it registered 10 deaths.

October 8 is marked as the third with the most registered cases of covid-19 since the pandemic reached Portugal. In the last 24 hours, 1278 more people with the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, confirming the revelation made this morning by the Secretary of State for Health, António Lacerda Sales, during a visit to the Braga hospital.

Is it so the second day with more cases in Portugal, it was only surpassed by 1,516 infections on April 10 and ahead of 1,035 on March 31.

The bulletin of the General Directorate of Health (DGS) brought other figures that Sales did not advance: 10 more deaths, for a total of 2050, and an increase in hospitalized patients, from 764 to 801 (more 37) while they are admitted to health units . intensive care is now 115 (plus 11).

The victims are six men and three women over the age of 80 and one man in the age group between 70 and 79 years. Five of the victims lived in the North Region, so the deaths in a house of the Holy House in Bragança, three in the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo Region (RLVT) and two in the Central Region will not be unheard of.

The Northern Region, with 642 new cases, concentrated 50% of the infections reported in the last 24 hours, surpassing the barrier of 30 thousand, with a cumulative of 30,111. With five more deaths, it now adds 905 deaths associated with covid- 19, being the region with the highest mortality associated with the disease.

The RLVT added another 482 positive cases to the statistic, 37.8% of the daily total, for a cumulative of 41,707. With three more deaths added, there are now 814 deaths in the most populated region of the country.

The Central Region, the third most affected by the pandemic, registered more than 100 cases in a single day. With 101 more contagions, the accumulated number is now 6,662 and 271 deaths, two more than on Wednesday.

In the south, the figures are more serious in the Algarve, which accumulated 30 more infection records, for a cumulative number of 1892, with 20 deaths in total. In Alentejo, total deaths are higher than those registered in the extreme south of Portugal (25 since the beginning of the pandemic), but the cases are lower: 1604 until midnight on Wednesday, when the records are closed, already counting nine in the last 24 hours.

Insularity helps stop the progression of the virus

On the islands, mortality from covid-19 has remained unchanged for months. In the Azores there are 15 fatalities since the beginning of the pandemic, while Madeira did not have any deaths to mourn.

Surrounded by water, the two archipelagos have a natural barrier against covid-19 on the island: the Azores added four cases in the last 24 hours, for a total of 291, while Madeira, with another 10, now has an accumulated number of 267 Infections

In numbers “in bold”, the recovered cases amounted to 480, for a total of 51,517. Accounts made, discounting the deaths, there are 28,967 active cases of covid-19 in Portugal, an increase of 788 compared to Wednesday.

The disease affects women (45,020 since the start of the pandemic) more than men (37,514), but it kills equally: 1,030 male victims and 1020 female victims.

Not surprisingly, the figures for this day, the second worst since March 2, show how covid-19 essentially penalizes older people: with nine more victims registered, the group over 80 years old adds 1,375 deaths, 67 % lives lost due to the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus in Portugal: 605 men and 770 women.

The previous step, from 70 to 79 years, comprises 19.6% of fatalities, 247 men and 156 women, for a total of 403 deaths, while the immediately previous step, from 60 to 69 years, represents 8, 7% deaths, with 178 lives lost: 118 men and 60 men.

The 50-59 age bracket, with 63 deaths, represents 3% of total deaths, although it accumulates 11,780 positive cases, 14.3% of the total infections registered in the country.

The disease is particularly serious among the elderly.

Figures that show a higher incidence of the disease among the most professionally active age groups and among the youngest.

With about 40 thousand cases, the age groups between 20 and 49 years old, concentrate 47% of the total infections registered in the country. However, together, they account for about 1.5% of all deaths.

On the contrary, the age group over 80 years, which represents 9.8% of all infections, registers 67% of total deaths, while between 70 and 79 years there are 19.7% of deaths in only 6.6% of all infections nationwide.
