There will be no vaccine or treatment for coronavirus in the coming months

The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) warns that there will be no vaccines or treatments for covid-19 in the coming months, and it is “very likely” that they will only arrive in 2021, advising “caution” on measures lifting.

“Many experts [estão empenhados] and a lot of money is being invested in the discovery of vaccines and treatments, and although there are some more optimistic opinions, this will not happen so quickly, “says in an interview with the agency Lusa, the main specialist of the ECDC for response and emergency operations, Sergio Brusin.

“It is not something that will happen in the coming months,” reinforces the expert.

Referring to the various ongoing investigations, inside and outside Europe, Sergio Brusin points out that although some human testing for possible vaccines is already underway, “it will take several months to have enough production to distribute to everyone in Europe, it is not something that can be done quickly. ”

“There must be safe production, do the distribution, prioritize who to give first,” he lists, emphasizing that “this is much more likely to only happen in 2021.”

It is also unknown here that this new coronavirus is still for specialists, since, as it is a new outbreak, it is not known “whether the vaccines or treatments to be created will protect only for a season, such as flu vaccines, or if it will be something that will protect for a longer time “, explains Sergio Brusin to Lusa.

Therefore, “for the time being, we must continue to do” what is being done, “namely [manter] physical and social distance, follow-up of contacts “, among other measures, he defends.

“And if a vaccine is discovered later this year, early next year, and if production starts soon, then next year we can be more optimistic,” says the expert.

According to Sergio Brusin, “a little more optimistic” is now the image of the pandemic in Europe, at least for a few weeks, so the expert recommends that countries be “cautious” and “watch” the lifting of restrictive measures. .

In some 20 European countries, including Portugal, “it was already possible to stabilize the increase in terms of numbers,” so “the pandemic in Europe is slowly slowing down,” the official explained.

“This shows that the measures taken by the various authorities, including the Member States, are working and now we have to be very careful and start lifting some of the restrictions to see what happens,” he warns.

And he recommends: “It is necessary to be cautious when studying the measures and this can only be done if [os países] Really monitor the situation very closely so that in advance they can reimpose some of the measures if necessary. ”

Still, this does not mean that covid-19 is already controlled in Europe.

“We definitely cannot control it yet, but the number of cases does not increase as it happened,” emphasizes Sergio Brusin.

However, there are countries “where this decline is not yet occurring and it is not known whether it was due to the late implementation of the measures or whether there are other reasons,” such as Sweden, the United Kingdom or Bulgaria, the expert tells Lusa.

Europe is the region most affected in the world by the pandemic, since it has crossed the barriers of 150,000 deaths in millions of cases.

Based in Sweden, ECDC is an agency of the European Union that helps countries prepare to respond to disease outbreaks.
