Portugal has never had so many deaths or new cases in a single day since the start of the pandemic. Friday’s bulletin from the General Directorate of Health (DGS) reveals that, in the last 24 hours, 40 more people died from covid-19 and that 4,656 new cases of infection were diagnosed.

Until then, the maximum daily deaths had been registered on April 3, with 37 deaths, and yesterday Thursday the maximum daily number of new cases had been registered with 4,224 infections. Portugal now has a total of 2,468 deaths and 137,272 cases since the start of the pandemic.

Of the 40 deaths, 19 occurred in the north, 13 in Lisbon and the Tagus valley, three in the center, three in the Alentejo and two in the Algarve.

It is followed by Lisbon and the Tagus Valley, with more than a thousand new cases, with more than 1,357 infected, the Center with 334, the Alentejo with 65 and the Algarve with 57. Madeira confirmed four more diagnoses of covid-19 and the Azores plus eight.

Also this Friday, the number of patients in Intensive Care Units (ICU) reached a new record. There are currently 1,927 hospitalized patients with covid-19, 93 more than yesterday. Of these, 275, six more compared to the last balance, are in ICU. The maximum corresponded to April 7, with 271 admissions to the ICU.

The total recovered is now 77,449, 1,747 more than yesterday.
