The Government says that “there are no conditions” to increase salaries in the Civil Service in 2021. The Minister of Administrative Modernization and Public Administration said that the Covid-19 pandemic and the consequent economic crisis have annulled the Government’s intention to increase salaries of public administration next year.

“If everything went well, there would be conditions for a transversal increase of 1%, there are no such conditions. In a context in which people are losing their jobs, I think that from the point of view of solidarity among workers it would be difficult to defend a transversal increase for public service workers ”, said Alexandra Leitão in an interview with Antena 1 / Jornal de Negócios.

The minister recalled that in 2019 in the negotiations of this year’s State Budget “it was found that there was a gap”, but that the situation this year is “very different.”

“We all understand that in the current situation in which we strive to avoid job losses, in which there is unemployment, to guarantee jobs, we cannot go beyond the protection of income and the basis of the salary table for accompany the rise in the minimum wage ”said the minister.

“It is always possible for things to go better during negotiation or within budget. This is what we proposed to the unions, this is what we have already talked about. In compliance with the negotiation rules, the delivery of the EO was foreseen. Right now, I can’t go any further ”, according to Alexandra Leitão.
