For the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, the number of new cases of Covid-19 in Portugal exceeded 900, which makes this weekend, where it was the barrier of the 2,000 dead, the worst in history in terms of new cases of contagion by the new coronavirus in the country.

According to the bulletin released this Sunday by the General Directorate of Health, the last 24 hours were diagnosed 904 new cases of Covid-19, bringing the total number of confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic to 79,151.

The death toll this Sunday exceeded two thousand. With 10 more confirmed deaths in the last 24 hours (eight in Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, two in the north), Portugal has already registered a total of 2,005 deaths following the coronavirus infection.

Although most of the deaths occurred in the Lisbon region and the Tagus Valley, it was in the North where the highest number of cases was registered this Sunday (with 490 cases), followed by Lisbon and the Tagus Valley (+316) , Center (+69), Algarve (+15), Alentejo (+11), Azores (+2) and Madeira (+1).

As for the numbers, the pandemic shows no signs of slowing down: the number of people recovered this Sunday was a third of the number of new cases. Only 362 people recovered from the disease in Portugal in 24 hours. On the other hand, the number of hospitalized patients continues to increase. Currently, 682 people are hospitalized with Covid-19 in Portugal (14 more than on Saturday).

In addition to the numbers of the day, a look at the history of the evolution of the pandemic in Portugal shows that this Sunday goes directly to the list of the most worrying days of the entire pandemic in terms of new cases.

With 904 new cases, this Sunday is the fourth day with the highest number of cases ever, just behind April 10 (1,516 cases), March 31 (1,035 cases) and yesterday (963 new cases). At the same time, for the first time since the start of the pandemic, the number of new cases exceeds 900 in two consecutive days, making it the worst weekend of the entire pandemic.

This week comes to an end as the second with the highest daily average of cases. On average, in the last seven days, there were 792 cases per day. You have to go back in mid-April to find a worse record.
