Russian police organized a manhunt operation after a group of assailants stole technical equipment from a top-secret military plane, known as the “Doomsday Plane,” designed to be used in a nuclear war.
The theft occurred when a team was carrying out maintenance work on the Ilyushin Il-80 plane and has now raised serious questions about the security of the military installations, according to Reuters.
The aircraft was modified from a Soviet Union jet during the end of the Cold War to serve as an air command post for senior officers to control their troops during a possible nuclear war.
The theft was only discovered earlier this week, but according to some media, it was detected last Friday, when signs of invasion were found through the cargo hatch. 39 electronic units were missing.
The Rostov region police said in a statement that the search operation was ongoing, but that no suspects had yet been arrested.
The authorities did not give details about the nature of the stolen material, however, they revealed that it was worth around one million rubles, about 11 thousand euros.
Russian experts believe that the equipment was stolen because some units were assembled from precious metals, such as gold and platinum.
The incident comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin invested a lot of money to reform the Russian military.
The Kremlin has already warned that measures will be taken to prevent this incident from happening again.
