The epidemiological situation in the Algarve “is far from being controlled” and the last fortnight was the one with the highest number of confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic. This Friday, at a press conference of the District Civil Protection Commission, Paulo Morgado, president of the Regional Health Administration, revealed that the region is “globally above the limit of 240 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days “. .

According to this official, the transmission rate (RT) of the disease in the Algarve is 1.1, “a value above the national RT. However, it is not the worst of all regions. ‘

Paulo Morgado believes that “we may be reaching a plateau area”, but that does not mean that the situation is close to being controlled. In fact, according to the president of ARS, the daily number of cases “should not begin to fall before mid-December.”

“We are only now beginning to see a decrease in the number of new cases in regions that have measures in place for much longer, such as in the North, where RT is now approaching 1. It takes several weeks for measures to take effect and therefore We cannot relax, ”he stressed.

Regarding the installed capacity in hospitals, according to Paulo Morgado, there is a “still low occupancy rate, compared to other regions of the continent. In the ICU we have 10 occupied beds out of a total of 17, which at this stage are intended for Covid patients, but there is still a significant remaining capacity, “he said.

Currently, the largest outbreak in the region, according to Ana Cristina Guerreiro, regional health delegate, is that of the Faro prison, “which already has 80 cases, most of them prisoners.”

There are also, according to the official, several outbreaks “related to parties, birthdays and family gatherings, for example in Lagoa and Portimão” and an outbreak in Lagos that has already caused 19 cases of Covid-19.

Paulo Morgado highlighted that, at present, the regional scenario is one of “scattered outbreaks appearing here and there”, being that, “in the last 15 days, Barlavento and the central area have been more affected”.

This Friday, there were 83 new cases of Covid-19 in the Algarve and three deaths.
