“This was a warning! It went well, thank God, but one day there will be a tragedy,” the president of the Association for the Greater Safety of Men of the Sea shoots indignantly. Friday, at the entrance to the port Póvoa de Varzim fishing boat. The two members of the crew were saved.

Trying to help, a third fisherman fell into the water. José Festas has no doubts: excess sand at the entrance of the bar is the culprit. The captain of the port, Bruno Ferreira Teles, acknowledges the problem of sedimentation, but as for the fault, only the investigation will be able to tell.

“It was 10:45 in the morning. I was entering the bar and a turn of the sea made the boat turn,” José Festas told JN. The president of Pro-Maior is “fed up” with warning of the dangers in the town of Barra, caused by excessive accumulation of sand. The fact is that, with a lot of sand and little depth, the waves are stronger and, for small boats like “Alexandra Patrícia” -with about five meters-, danger lurks “every day”.

Thank you, says José Festas, for the prompt intervention of the lifeboat of the Institute of Help to the Shipwrecked (ISN) that, alerted by other fishermen, rescued, in a few minutes, the two crew members, between 40 and 50 years old.

The harbor master says sedimentation is “a known problem” there. Even so, the causes of the accident, only the investigation can determine them. One thing is certain, he assures, “the bar was open and with all conditions”.

With the fishermen saved, the president of Pro-Maior continued, it was necessary to try to save the boat. “Mãe do Céu” and “Santa Inês” went to help, but, as luck never comes alone, when passing the cables, one of the crew of “Mãe do Céu” fell into the water. The fisherman would eventually escape unscathed, but, José Festas warns, “the warning remained.”

With the high tide, already in the afternoon, he tried to remove the boat again. “It’s a shame! This maneuver was supposed to be done in half an hour. We’ve been here for more than two hours, because the sand won’t let us,” he complained again. The operation will only be completed in the early afternoon.
