The São João Hospital already feels the pressure to relax the restrictive measures to combat the covid-19 pandemic during Christmas, with more than one hundred suspected cases treated daily. Of these, 25% to 30% are confirmed positive. And it is not yet possible to know what the effect of the New Year is on the number of new infections.

At one point in the pandemic situation in the largest hospital in the North, which is usually a barometer of what is happening in the rest of the country, Nelson Pereira, coordinator of the São João Intensive Care Unit, warns of this situation that will have tendency to worsen when hospital admissions to the ward begin and, consequently, admissions to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

So far, there is still no increased pressure on hospitalizations, because, as he explained, the arrival of new cases works in three waves. First, the cases begin to increase. A few days later, the number of patients needing hospitalization increases and only afterwards is this pressure felt in Intensive Care. Given this scenario, Nelson Pereira launched an alert for the situation and called for “maximum attention” for the next few days.

At this time, the São João Hospital has 101 hospitalized patients with covid-1946 of them in the ICU, with 22 ICU beds open beyond normal capacity and, taking into account the current situation, it will be natural that the need to use this unit will increase in the coming weeks.

On vaccinating hospital staff, already 2,500 were inoculated against covid-19 and another 1,500 will be vaccinated this week, with vaccines that arrived at the hospital this Monday.
