It was in 2019 that Samsung officially launched its first smartphone with a folding screen. The Samsung Galaxy Fold came as the innovation of the year, but also the failure of the year. Now comes the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 with an improved design, larger screens and the guarantee of a higher quality folding screen.
Samsung assumes that the Samsung Galaxy Fold was not the best smartphone it has ever released. It assumes all the problems that users have been pointing out and ensures that all the criticized issues have been considered for the creation of a new Fold.
Today, officially, the South Korean company launches its Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2. At first glance, the brand's dedication to creating a product cousin. The large outer screen, the inner screen without camera grinding and even the rear camera module itself show greater care.

One of Samsung's main concerns, mentioned during the official announcement of the new Fold, was related to the folding screen. The criticisms of the first model were many, but Samsung did not intend to abandon the idea of having a smartphone that in seconds became a tablet.

The Z Fold2's new folding screen went from 7.3 ″ to 17.6 ″, and the bezels around the screen decreased substantially. In addition, the cutout that existed with the cameras was converted to a simple, small single-camera perforation.
This QXGA + Dynamic AMOLED display has a maximum refresh rate of 120 Hz, which, as is known, allows more fluid use in both basic activities and games. One particularity is that the refresh rate can be defined as adaptable to the content that is being played, improving the performance of the smartphone and minimizing battery consumption.
On the experience of using content playback, Samsung placed a stereo speaker system in the center, next to the screen hinge. According to the company, the system is so powerful that it excludes the use of Bluetooth speakers.
Speaking of hinges, the system of this new product has also been improved, minimizing the impact on the screen.
The large outdoor screen
The exterior screen has also received a very important update. The small 4.2 ″ screen went to 6.2 ″, also with a small hole for the camera.
This SuperAMOLED display has HD + resolution. Considering it is a secondary screen, it is understandable that it does not have that much resolution, it could still be FullHD.
In terms of dimensions, the new smartphone despite having larger screens, turns out to be relatively smaller and thinner than the original Galaxy Fold. In concrete, closed measures 159.2 x 128.2 x 6.9 - 6 mm, and open measures 159.2 x 68 x 16.8 - 13.8 mm.
The cameras
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 is equipped with a total of 5 cameras, three of which are located on the rear, one on the outer screen and one on the inner screen.
The rear module includes a 12 MP ultra-wide camera, a 12 MP (f / 1.8) wide-angle camera, and a 12 MP telephoto camera. The other two placed on the screens are both 10 MP (f / 2.2).
In terms of functionality, it is worth mentioning the Capture View Mode which, on one side of the screen shows the camera application and on the other the result of the photo captured in the Gallery application. Thus, it becomes easy to see if the photo has the desired results, being able to minimize the number of captures or access to the gallery so frequently.
For video, Auto Framing mode helps you shoot automatically by following a moving object, using a combination of cameras. In addition, the smartphone can be used folded at 45º, which makes it safe as if it were on a tripod.
With the smartphone open, you can take selfies with the main camera module, using the external screen to preview.
The characteristics of a folding screen.
The Continuity app allows you to use the apps on the outer screen, and when you open your smartphone, the app switches to the inner screen (and vice versa). Flex mode, in turn, allows you to use the smartphone folded at the desired angle, as if it were a laptop. In other words, on the screen that is facing up is the display screen and, at the bottom, are the different controllers for the different applications, keyboards or gesture control.
Since the screen is large, it is also perfect for using several applications open simultaneously on the screen (maximum three).
Also note that there are some apps that have been optimized by the creators themselves for the screens of the Galaxy Z Fold2. Namely, Microsoft Office and YouTube applications.
Other features
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 comes equipped with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. The battery is 4500 mAh, with fast charging technology and can be charged wirelessly.
It has Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac / ax, and UWB. It includes facial recognition unlocking, without advanced technology behind it, and it also has a fingerprint sensor placed on the side.
Availability
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 is available in bronze and black (Mystic Bronze and Mystic Black). Additionally, customers will be able to choose a custom hinge. For online shoppers, it will be possible to choose a gray, red, blue or gold hinge, all colors with a metallic finish.
Finally, there is also an exclusive version. This is a Thom Browne edition. In addition to the unique design of the Z Fold2, Galaxy Buds Live and a Galaxy Watch 3 are also included, all sold in the same package, with a few more customization accessories. The smartphone also has some improvements in terms of hardware and software over the base model.
The new Z Fold2 will be available on September 18, with pre-sales scheduled for September 1, 2020, starting at € 2,049.
