The Regional Government of the Azores reported today that it has already provided complementary and timely support, with respect to covid-19, to 240 students displaced from their island of residence, having received, so far, 286 requests.

In a press release, the Azores executive said 240 applications have already been processed and the rest are in the process of “analysis, documentation gathering and processing.”

This extraordinary support line is aimed at Azores students who “have to stay longer where they are due to the covid-19 pandemic” and mobility restrictions for the region.

The support will be allocated between 100 and 250 euros per month “for accommodation and food expenses, between the months of April and June”, which is defined based on household income.

To support the application process, the Green Line was created to support displaced students, which has already served 477 youth.

In the note sent to the press, the regional undersecretary of the Presidency for Parliamentary Affairs, Berto Messias, guarantees “great speed in the processing and allocation of the support that was created.”

The government official emphasizes that it is necessary “to make a permanent evaluation of this matter, since the situation of the households may change from month to month, if there is loss or reduction of the income of the members of the household, as well as if the student manages to return, leading to the end of the support assignment. ”

Berto Messias also mentioned the issue of the return of the displaced students: “The heart tells us to bring everyone back, but reason requires that we continue to monitor this situation with caution, realizing the evolution of this pandemic and the precautionary measures and conditional restrictions that have not yet been taken, the transition that will take place after the end of the state of emergency, as well as developments in higher education establishments, taking into account that there is the possibility of the reopening of some even this school year , which will cause the return intentions we have registered to change ”.

On April 15, a group of displaced Azorean students on the continent appealed to the President of the Republic to make “every effort” to return to their homes on the different islands of the Azores.

According to the letter, the students asked Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa “for all efforts to have a safe rescue operation, including air and land transport”, to reach their home islands.

The group of students had already sent a letter, earlier this month, to the President of the Regional Government of the Azores, Vasco Cordeiro, in which they even suggested that this rescue be carried out using a C295 aircraft of the Portuguese Air Force, with capacity. for 70 passengers.

At that time, the President of the Government of the Azores ruled out defining a “special operation” to transport Azorean students to the region on the continent, highlighting the support provided to young people in the context of the covid-19 pandemic.

Since the start of the outbreak, 138 cases of covid-19 have been confirmed in the Azores, 90 of which are currently active, with 37 recoveries (23 in São Miguel, eight in Terceira, five in São Jorge and one in Pico) and 11 deaths (in San Miguel).

The island of São Miguel registered the majority of cases (100), followed by Terceira (11), Pico (10), São Jorge (seven), Faial (five) and Graciosa (five).
