In a note published on the website of the Presidency of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa says that “his sudden and tragic death, at a time in his life in which there would be so much to expect from his example as a shepherd and a good man, it is a cause of consternation for the Portuguese, believers and non-believers. “

The head of state says that Anacleto Oliveira recently “celebrated 50 years of priesthood and 10 years of presence in the diocese of Alto Minho” and that his appointment as bishop of Viana do Castelo, in 2010, “was the culmination of a spiritual and many decades of pastoral work at the service of the Catholic Church and its faithful ”.

“I offer my condolences to the bereaved family and the Catholic Church,” wrote the President of the Republic.
